Vertical Turret Lathe

For particularly large workpieces, so-called vertical lathes with a horizontal face plate are regularly used as work spindles. The workpiece is clamped centrically onto the horizontally rotating face plate. Depending on the design (single column, double column or portal design), a lateral tower or two towers and a cross beam (also called cross beam) serve as guidance for one or more tool slides and jibs. In double column or portal designs, up to three independent turning tools are used at the same time, which significantly reduces the considerable machining time typical of large workpieces. The length of the turned parts is comparatively limited due to their design. Due to the possibility of a large-area bearing of the face plate, which is often designed as a hydrostatic sliding bearing on large machines, even very heavy workpieces such as pressure vessels of a core or chemical reactor can be machined.
